A Cozy Intimate Wedding in Central Park: Jennifer and Gary's Story

Meeting in Glasgow, Scotland, Jennifer (32) and Gary (34) made a significant leap when they moved to Perth, Australia. After being together for nearly two years, they decided to tie the knot during a family trip to New York City, taking their beloved three-year-old chihuahua-shih tzu, Ted, along for the ride.

The idea of a wedding emerged while they were planning the family vacation. Jennifer jokingly suggested they get married if their family visited, to which Gary readily agreed. They collaborated on designing an engagement ring, with Gary proposing a few days later during a picturesque picnic at South Perth Esplanade.

For Jennifer, getting married held extra meaning since their proximity to loved ones was limited. “Getting married became more important to me, as I wanted us to be an ‘official’ family, considering we don’t have immediate family here,” she explained. While Jennifer had once envisioned a Las Vegas wedding, Gary was not on board. They briefly considered a more traditional ceremony in Scotland but felt it would be far too costly given their large families. Instead, Jennifer crafted a plan that felt more liberating and personalized by opting for a destination wedding.

Managing the planning solo from Australia presented challenges such as coordinating time zones with family in Scotland and vendors in New York. “At times it felt a bit lonely planning it on my own,” she admitted, but she remained optimistic about her choice.

In their search for venues, the couple first considered New York City Hall. However, upon seeing photos of Central Park weddings, they were drawn to Belvedere Castle. Unfortunately, it was undergoing renovations for the year, leading them to select the Ladies' Pavilion instead. Jennifer felt a wave of relief knowing that New York City provided numerous solutions if anything went amiss. Admittedly, she was a bit anxious about the weather since they'd set their hearts on an outdoor ceremony. Luckily, they had a sunny day, even after a snowstorm the day prior, which surprisingly added a delightful touch to their wedding pictures.

During their ten-day stay in New York, the couple and eleven guests found comfort at the Loews Regency Hotel on Park Avenue, where the staff provided exceptional service, including a complimentary upgrade to a two-bedroom suite. On the wedding day, their bridal party got hair and makeup done in their suite while enjoying breakfast from a local deli. Transportation was arranged through a limo, which helped ferry Gary and his guests first, followed by Jennifer and her bridal party, along with the photographer.

The ceremony unfolded at the Ladies' Pavilion, with Jennifer wearing a stunning A-line gown from a boutique in Perth. She chose a bouquet of white roses adorned with thistles, picked up from a vendor outside City Hall. They kept vows traditional but incorporated the Scottish custom of sharing whisky from a quaich, symbolizing their unity and connection. A groomsman read a heartfelt poem reflecting their relationship dynamics, reinforcing their bond over their shared love for dogs.

After the ceremony, they captured photographs around Central Park, including the iconic LOVE sculpture and bustling Times Square, all thanks to their photographer from Jasmine Photography. A vintage trolley bus was hired for additional sightseeing, followed by a stunning celebratory dinner.

For the dinner, they had a private dining area booked at Session 73 on the Upper East Side. The couple enjoyed live music, with a song dedicated to them by the band for their first dance. Jennifer highlighted the relaxed atmosphere and impeccable service, noting that the day was executed perfectly, with just a minor hiccup being the absence of a soft drink for her pregnant sister.

Jennifer emphasized the importance of crafting a wedding that reflects the couple's desires without external pressures. Given her parents' elopement in Gretna Green, she felt encouraged to proceed with a non-traditional wedding. Recognizing the rising costs of traditional weddings, she believes destination weddings are becoming increasingly popular.

Although they cherished their wedding day, one regret was the absence of some family members, including Gary’s father and all grandparents. However, they created a very intimate blessing ceremony back in Scotland shortly after their wedding, allowing them to share the experience with family. Despite some missed connections during planning, they successfully included their relatives through video calls.

Jennifer’s final thoughts reflected on their experience: “If you’re thinking about marrying in Central Park, do it; you won’t regret it. It was magical, and the warmth of the New Yorkers made it special, as everyone congratulated us and took pictures.” Thanks to Jennifer and Gary for sharing their beautiful wedding story, and we wish them a bright future ahead!
