Creating Memorable Wedding Atmospheres: Insights from Rishi Patel of Svarin Creative

The dark skies and sirens of a Chicago storm were the backdrop for my video meeting with Rishi Patel, a leading wedding designer whose firm, Svarin Creative, is already booking into 2028. Despite the chaos, Rishi's warm presence was unwavering as he calmly navigated the storm, embodying his philosophy that behind-the-scenes tumult should never touch the clients.

Rishi’s approach to wedding design blends artistic vision with analytical precision — a skillset cultivated from an early age. Starting as a teenager at a flower shop, his initial venture into event design was born from a love of art, coupled with an innate talent for numbers. This duality laid the groundwork for his successful career.

From Business to Creativity

After high school, Rishi pursued a degree at Indiana University, focusing on finance amid a tumultuous job market post-2008 financial crisis. Yet, he yearned for a creative outlet that corporate mergers and acquisitions couldn’t provide. Trusting his instincts, Rishi pivoted into event design, realizing that his blend of floral expertise and spatial design would thrive in this new realm.

Over the next 15 years, he honed his craft in a Chicago design firm, rising through the ranks to become CEO and creative director by 2018. Rishi foresaw a growing demand for destination weddings, steering the company into global markets long before the trend bloomed. When a split with a business partner over visions for the future ensued, Rishi founded Svarin Creative, deliberately limiting projects to focus on quality over quantity and providing bespoke attention to each couple. He caps the company at 15 to 20 weddings annually.

Your Unique Wedding as a Custom Commission

For Rishi, the wedding designer's role transcends traditional roles often seen in the industry. Rather than diving straight into color schemes or floral arrangements, client onboarding emphasizes understanding the couple’s lives beyond wedding aesthetics. Conversations dig deep into clients' personal experiences — favorite restaurants, travel destinations, and books — to inspire the design process.

This method opens the door to creating a meaningful atmosphere that resonates on a personal level. After initial discussions, Rishi sketches design concepts by hand, leading to the creation of a prototype with tables, fabrics, and lighting that evokes the desired feeling of comfort and joy that will ultimately shape the event.

Rishi's undertakings can be massive, sometimes involving extensive logistical arrangements such as shipping 42 cargo containers for an event or managing complex installations that span weeks. He ensures that he’s hands-on during installations, making minute adjustments that can dramatically alter a room's atmosphere.

Quality Over Glitz

Rishi's design philosophy prioritizes emotion and experience over mere spectacle. When budget discussions arise, he's quick to point out the frequent misallocation of funds, often seeing extravagant floral designs overshadow critical aspects like service quality or ambiance. His current focus is on crafting spaces that feel inviting and intimate—eschewing excessive floral arrangements for designs that encourage genuine connection among guests.

Moving away from what he terms "floral vomit," Rishi expresses concern about the obsession with creating Instagrammable moments that detract from the overall experience. He is wary of designs that prioritize social media presence over guest interaction and enjoyment. According to him, “The Instagrammable moment is such a small snapshot of the event,” highlighting the fleeting nature of such focus.

Cultivating Lasting Memories

As weddings continue to evolve, Rishi predicts that couples will soon look back, questioning why so much energy was spent on aesthetics rather than genuine interaction with their loved ones. His hope is to encourage couples to invest in experiences and atmosphere that truly connect them with guests, rather than fleeting moments designed for the camera.

Reflecting on his journey as a wedding designer, Rishi expresses gratitude for his career. “We get to work with the best, nicest people, in the most incredible places in the world,” he shares. Inspiration fuels his creativity, accumulating in sketches and notes until the right project comes along. That passion ensures that every wedding he touches is crafted with intention, aiming to create an unforgettable atmosphere where memories are made.

With a full understanding of logistics and aesthetics, Rishi Patel and Svarin Creative stand out in the wedding industry by championing a thoughtful approach to design that honors the couple’s unique story. Their process fosters not just beautiful events, but memorable experiences that couples cherish for years to come.
