An Elegant Fusion: Kelly and Guy's Multicultural American-Israeli Wedding at Al HaYam

Combining elements from diverse cultural backgrounds can add a unique charm to weddings, and the celebration of American bride Kelly and Israeli groom Guy exemplifies this beautifully. Having both established their careers in Tel Aviv’s tech scene, they envisioned their wedding as a chance to showcase their love for Israel, especially to family and friends visiting from abroad. Their chosen venue, Al HaYam in Sdot Yam, provided the perfect backdrop. With collaborative efforts from their wedding producer, Vanessa Events, they created a day that seamlessly interwove their American and Israeli heritages through food, music, and meaningful traditions. The stunning images captured by Tzahi Shemesh reflect the essence of this special day.

One particularly touching aspect of their ceremony was the ketubah signing, which their rabbi enhanced with a meaningful ritual. Family members blessed the couple with a word, which was then incorporated into a shared carafe of wine that they used later on during the ceremony. This symbolic act perfectly encapsulates the day’s spirit of unity and love.

How They Met

Kelly, the bride: I relocated to Tel Aviv nearly seven years ago, initially with plans to stay for a brief three months. Fate intervened, as my dad humorously shared during his wedding speech; I fell in love twice—once with the enchanting Israel and again with Guy, who I met three years post my arrival on Bumble. Our first date was particularly unconventional—we took an illegal walk around the neighborhood during the covid restrictions. Our connection was instant; we would stroll or sit in parks for hours, talking until sunrise, and three years later, Guy proposed to me while we were on vacation in Greece.

Choosing to Marry in Israel

While we initially pondered the idea of tying the knot in the U.S., where my family resides, the thought of sharing our love for Israel with our close ones proved overwhelming. Al HaYam struck the right chord, offering a distinctive alternative to traditional indoor venues. Upon our first visit, it left such a profound impression that we couldn't envision our wedding anywhere else.

Blending Cultures

The wedding captures a delightful fusion of our cultural heritages, reflecting both our Israeli and American identities through food, music, and customs. The entire atmosphere was relaxed yet meaningful, making the occasion unique to us. It was fundamental for me that my family experienced an authentic Israeli wedding atmosphere while simultaneously exposing Guy's relatives to American wedding traditions—all within the span of a single day.

We were fortunate to have Vanessa guiding us throughout a year of planning, ensuring every detail was perfect and that both families felt immersed in the experience. She truly made our vision a reality and managed to maintain a calm environment amidst the wedding festivities.

Bridal Attire from BHLDN

I chose a dress from BHLDN, the bridal line by Anthropologie. My aim was for something simplistic yet elegant, ideally suited to the breezy beach setting, but comfort was my top priority. This dress allowed me to move freely and dance the night away without compromise.

Ceremony Highlights

An unforgettable feature of our ceremony was the unique ketubah signing ritual. Each family member contributed a word of blessing, pouring their wine into a shared carafe, from which we subsequently sipped during the ceremony. This act brought our families together while creating a beautiful moment reflective of our union.

For the ketubah itself, I opted to design it using Canva, allowing us to express our style and desires fully, even leaving room for additional artwork in the future.

Musical Memories

When it came to music, we were thrilled to have Bearded Gilad as our DJ. He tactfully blended Israeli and American tracks, ensuring that all our guests could relate to the music, which kept the party alive into the night. Seeing our American cousins dancing to popular Israeli hits was a highlight, confirming our work paid off. For our glass-breaking moment, we used "6’s to 9’s" by Big Wild & Rationale, with Gilad expertly timing the moment for maximum impact.

Floral Elegance

For floral arrangements, we collaborated with Danielle Liron, who ensured every detail was in harmony with the venue’s natural allure. Her arrangements had a palette of whites and neutral tones, filled with orchids, amaranthus, and artisanal touches of seashells and corals.

Capturing Moments

We were fortunate to work with photographer Tzahi Shemesh and videographer Avi Abayev. Their friendly and relaxed demeanor contributed to a stress-free experience, even when we ran behind schedule. They captured the essence of our day beautifully, making it enjoyable for everyone involved.

Facing Challenges

The lead-up to our wedding was fraught with anxiety as many family members dealt with varying travel complications amidst international tensions. Eventually, everyone made it, but the wedding coincided with escalated tensions, turning what was planned to be a week into nearly a month-long stay for relatives, providing an unforgettable experience for them.

Wise Words for Future Couples

It’s easy to commit to being present on your big day; the challenge is putting it into practice. We took our time to savor each moment before key events, which enriched our experience. Understandably, not everything may go according to plan, and that's perfectly alright. Being surrounded by loved ones creates an indescribable magic, and those moments are what truly stay with you long after the day has passed.
